I was at St Andrews Fairmont the other weekend, having something to eat at the club house and nosey at the pro shop.

Some guys were shouting and making a lot of noise….’have you got a pound (£1)?’ shouts one of the guys. I don’t think £1 is a big deal when it’s £90 for a round of golf. Then the other guy says ‘what chip shop we going to?’. The club house serves more expensive food but in a more civilised atmosphere, I just don’t know why 8 guys wouldn’t want to get something to eat at the course and a few beers – unless they were cheapskates…in which case forget playing golf at St Andrews!

One previous time there I heard a mother and daughter talking about how the husband put golf days on his credit card….and the mother encouraged her daughter to spend on her husbands credit card herself. But she was fortunately of smarter sense.

Golf on the Nintendo WII – it could be the answer

The Nintendo WII has various golf games, and with the real life swing action of the controller, it is remarkably life like.

Still I’d like some weight ‘add-on’ to the controller but of course that could get dangerous swinging at the TV.

Nintendo WII rocks. Period.

Winter golf, the best golf?

With the winter greens, it can actually benefit your score.

The winter greens are typically shorter distance. OK, they’re bumpy. But for a mediocre or crap golfer, just play a shorter club for more accuracy and you’ll find the green quickly. Next, just aim to put the ball near the hole….play it a little short. Then you can put short too…because the ball will probably bounce around even if you’re on target…so closer is better.

I made a birdie on winter greens one year to prove how easy it is. And to add further the course is empty which means you can relax and hit 2 or 3 balls per hole instead of 1.

Fed up of slicing the golf ball? Try holding the club as normal and doing a restricted swing, about 40 degrees of what you normally would. Your body/torso should not move.

What this will do is keep the club face square with the ball – ideal for getting used to a driver. It reduces your driving distance but means you have an excellent chance of a straight shot. Ideal for shots that have water inbetween.

I made a shot at Mystic Dunes in Florida this way, perfectly onto the green across water.

You might have a perfect swing pal, but you look gay

Yes, golf sucks. So much I’ve decided to put up a blog on why golf (and other games) is so evil.

Over $2000 I spent on golf lessons, only to be rewarded with a flukey 96 and I still flunk half my t-shots.

Maybe it’s my previous success in various other fields – Tetris champ, circuit driving genius, 8-ball pool wizard, card playing shark. I’ve found other games somewhat easier to pick up compared to golf.

Some people might say that a 96 is great. Well, I’m prob.100-110 normally. And yes my golf course is ridiculously difficult – the first hole is across water, the rest are trees either side and blind crests. To attain anywhere near 100 I have to play 4 times a week, 18 holes + 2 visits to the driving range. If I don’t, performance dips off into the toilet and I’m shooting 1000s, not 100s.

In anycase, this blog will hopefully give a sarcastic humourous insight into golf and how bad I am at it….
